2003 AKA Kitemakers Competition:
Bowed Kites
 

"Sky Fantasy" by Jose Sainz

FIRST PLACE

Jose is a previous Grand Champion and has been building kites since 1988. He says this kite was inspired by the works of Ron Gibian.

"Spirit of Ohio" by Bob Lockhardt

SECOND PLACE

Celebrating the bicentenial of Ohio, this red, white, and blue Brogden had the highest craftsmanship score in the category.

"Monie" by Scott Spencer

THIRD PLACE

A label from a wine bottle inspired this graphic. Scott is a Master Kitebuilder and has many awards to his credit. This kite had the best Flight score in the category.

"Vanilla Elegance" by John Gabby

FOURTH PLACE

Very good craftsmanship in this wonderful kite made from wood and paper. John is a MasterKitebuilder and has been building kites since 1953!

"Dakotacrome" by Deb Lenzen

Inspired by a Pendleton Horse blanket, Deb has been building kites since 2000 and has come a long way. Her kites are always visually stuning and inspire thoughts of our country's great north west.

"SW Butterfly" by Walt Mitchell

Walt was inspired by a southwestern rug for this design, then took is a step further by reversing colors left and right. This kite earned the highest visual score in the category.

"Tinkerbell" by Jim Johannesen

Jim is a machinest by trade and has been building kites since 1999. This kite was made for his daugher and her grandmother named it Tinkerbell.

"Snoopy!" by Cheryl Kear

Made as a tribute to Charles Schultz, this kite shows off down it's tail, the many personnas of Snoopy

"Autumn Leaves" by Donna Schenk

Inspired by the season, falling silk leaves are appliqued to a sunny yellow kite representing a clear autumn day. Great use of Mixed Media!

"Black Paper Kite" by Todd Little

Designed like a fighter but flown as a steady single line kite. All natural materials were used for it's construction - paper, bamboo, and glue.

"Double Butterfly" by Mike Shaw

Unfortunately, Mike had flight problems in the high winds and was disqualified, but this kite looks great! The good news is, he can enter it again next year!
