2003 AKA Kitemakers Competition:
Special Awards

NOVICE KITEBUILDER - FIST PLACE

With a score of 31.52, Mearl Balmer wins the top spot in highest scoring novice.

NOVICE KITEBUILDER - SECOND PLACE

Jim & Robin Johanesen had the second highest (30.43) novice score. Jim also had six of the top eight novice scores!

NOVICE KITEBUILDER - THIRD PLACE

Donna Schenk is no longer a novice! Scoring 29.07, she had the third highest novice score in the competition.

MIXED MEDIA

Sequins, flowers, feathers, and lace - made by our favorite red hat builder from the "vivacious village vamps" in Florida. The Mixed Media award went to the kitebuilder dressed in a purple dress and red hat, the one and only...... Barb Hall!

BEST USE OF TRADITIONAL MATERIALS

Made of washi paper and northern Japaneese spruce, John Gabby's "Vanilla Elegance" is honored with Best Use of Traditional Materials.

MOST INNOVATIVE KITE

Year after year he continuously improves upon his design. Just when you think he can go no further, he does it again. A stunt kite filled with innovation, and attention to detail like we have never seen before. Most Innovative Kite went to Lam Hoac!

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

A Fighter, made cooperatively by two kitebuilders. From a sail made long ago, joined with a sail made this past year. He obtained an unfinished kite from an estate and appliqued it onto a new skin and used similar construction techniques to turn it into a wonderful Fighter Kite. It was my honor to present the Special Recognition award to Arnold Stellama AND Lee Toy.
