Arches & Ribbons
"Arch trains consist of multiple kites linked end to end with a common line and tethered (or held in place) at both ends of the train. Arch ribbons are formed from a continuous piece of fabric that is tethered to the ground (or held in place) at both ends of the ribbon."

Bowed Kites
"The lifting surface is a single plane, usually a simple geometric shape. The surface is bowed, decreasing surface area and increasing drag for improved stability. Diamonds, Eddys, Rokkakus, and Edos, are all examples of Bowed kites. "

Cellular & Dimensional
"The kite design, often with the help of sails, bracing, or wind pressure, forms a rigid three-dimensional structure. The wind flows through the channels formed by the sail surfaces which are also lifting or stabilizing surfaces."

Delta & Delta Derivatives
"Delta kites usually have triangular wings. They have spars on the leading edge of the wings which can pivot on the spreader bar. One or more longitudinal spars help the kite to keep its shape. A keel is usually used but is not always necessary. "

Fighter Kites
"Small maneuverable single line kites. Without a tail, highly unstable... unless in the hands of a master. These kites are often flown in competition, scoring points for line touches and time."

Figure Kites
"The shapes of these kites represent persons, animals, or other objects. Examples of such representations include kites depicting birds, fish, serpents, and people. The figure represented by the kite should be discernable to knowledgeable observers. Kites whose surfaces are decorated with pictures or representations of persons, animals, or other objects are not considered to be figure kites."

"The lifting surface is a single plane, usually a simple geometric shape. These kites often have tails to improve stability. Hexagons, Cobras, and Bermudas are all examples of Flat kites. "

Line Art
"Line Art includes a lifter kite and everything attached to its line. The builder is free to use his imagination and is limited only by his creativity and what the lifter kite can raise."

Multi Line 'Sport' Kites
"These are kites that use more than one flying line to launch the kite into the air and to control its flight patterns. These kites are designed for the purpose of making high-performance maneuvers in flight."

Rokkaku
"Rokkaku kites must be six-sided and framed as traditional Sanjo-style Rokkaku. These kites are taller than they are wide and their cross spars are traditionally bowed."

Soft & Flexible
"These three-dimensional kites depend on the force of the wind on the kite, not on a rigid frame, to give the kite its shape. These kites may change their shape depending on the force of the wind. Soft kites have no spars. Flexible or semi-rigid kites may incorporate spars, with the spars going in one direction or one plane only."

Trains & Centitpedes
"Trains and centipedes are multiple kites of any shape or structure that are connected by lines to each other. Each member of the train need not be the same size and shape, but the entire flying structure should be a functional and visual sum of its individual parts."
