Roger Horne

The scale (31" longerons) version of the kite will fly on 3,000 ft of line. I flew with this much line out 3x this week - twice with 50# dacron and once with 40# dyneema. It flies much higher with the dyneema but if winds get much higher than 20+ mph the line may snap. It whistles like crazy at ~20mph.

Simon - did you build the version with P90 and P400 spars? How does it fly? RMoore built one about the same size (30 sq ft) with Avia fiberglass (outside: 9.4; inside: 7.52mm). He says I could up the spar size a little in my build.

Nice.... I have a personal dislike for the elastic or spring loaded connectors..... if and when the buggers break they are a PITA to replace.

Also like the idea that you can use the cord to pull the poles back out the sleeves..another PITA.

Guess who's gonna be threading his (big) family tent poles

Another example of mileage costs versus "shipping"
My lads at university in Leeds...about 120 miles from home.
If I go collect him, costs around 30 pounds in fuel for the round trip...or he can get a coach for between 1 pound (megabus) to 15 pounds (national express advanced booking)
The lad may moan but if he decides to bring his laundry home for a visit, he does it on the coach

Considering that I get 5 or 10 packages a week from them, it's quite a deal. I don't know whether their UK and elsewhere divisions offer this, but considering the variety of things they offer, it can be very useful.

Hadn't noticed that service on Amazon UK before but just looked and yup, Amazon Prime, unlimited free one day shipping for 49 pounds a year...... or you can opt for free shipping on their super saver delivery..which comes by pack horse and takes about a week....but if time isn't an issue

If you mean the large section that rises above the hull, you may mean "Conning Tower". The periscope is a very thin stick that rises from the conning tower. (Conning, meaning the place where you Con or control/conduct the sub when cruising on the surface.)

EDIT: Just did a bit of Wiki-ing: the structure on a sub is called the 'sail' (or fin in British usage) and the conning tower is a compartment within it or sometimes a chest-high well at the top.

From my time on submarines, WWII era diesel boats (fleet boats) and FBMs (Fleet Ballistic Missile) submarines I will offer a little input and a few links (in red).

On post WWII US submarines there is a sail, it is the raised structure above the hull of the sub. It is streamlined to minimize turbulence when the boat is submerged. It contains a bridge that is partially protected from the elements where the the lookouts and the Officer Of the Deck stood watch while the sub was on the surface.

Early fleet boats during WWII did not have a sail, both periscopes and radar if fitted came out of the pressure hull. The snorkel mast was free standing. The bridge was where the the lookouts and the Officer Of the Deck stood watch while the sub was on the surface. The conning tower was an internal compartment where the sub was commanded when it was submerged. It was in between the pressure hull and bridge.
Part 9 is a drawing of the conning tower in relation to the rest of the sub.
Example of a fleet sub with and without sail.

Fast forward to the nuclear submarine era. These subs do not have a conning tower, just the sail which housed the diving planes and the bridge.
Fast attack movin right along.
SSB(N) or FBM (Submarine Ballistic Nuclear or Fleet Ballistic Missile) on the surface.

There are special purpose submarines, they are "one off" and were built as their purpose dictated. They are exceptions.

Among my most prized possessions, Dolphins and SSBN pin .

It could work to connect the sections of a spine on a Midi-Pointer so that they don't come apart in the 12' long center sleeve. I suppose using line in stead of shock cord/bungee is lighter.

I never met Tony but I have met his son and Tony did a fine job of child raising. I will keep your family in my thoughts.

I am glad to here he is coming home... I agree with so much that has been said already... Spence hits closest to true.. have a party.. laugh about the fun times.... share (at least twice or three times more) the best times... the road ahead is rough (if its anything like the ones I have walked with loved ones) laughter made ours a little smoother..
