KITE: 10' Genki - Mike Dallmer
PLAN: http://www.vientocero.com/kpb/planos/genki2/genki2.html
DESCRIPTION: "When I first decided to build this kite I was looking for a low wind steady flying kite that could be staked and left to fly all day. What resulted was better than my expectations, with a wind range up to 20 mph. The plans that follows were created for a workshop that I will give as part of a continuing series of workshops that South Jersey Kite Flyers give. They are tested and proven to work, but anyone with any problems can feel free to contact me. I recommend that graphics be put on the sail after it is cut out but before assembly so that all the necessary reinforcing patches can be color coordinated. Good luck and building." _________________ Measure once, buy twice!

have not attempted that one yet but looks very complete and clear plans ! that is usually the first thing I look at ! so many plans are incomplete or just a few drawings .... wich makes it slightly difficult for a bigginer to start in the right direction! _________________ Bernie

This is the plan I used to build my Hummingbird Genki. It went together well. Only thing is, in the middle of construction, I had to redo the lower corner dacron reinforcements. I'd made them too small, maybe I misread something. But if anyone plans to make this you might check that the circle diameter you are using is actually large enough to hold the spar pocket that has to be sewn on. _________________ Knowledge is limited. I made one of these about a couple of years ago before I got into KAP. It's a superb plan and very well explained by Mike. I only realised it's potential for low-wind Kapping last year and every time I take it out I'm just beaming all over:
Usually, once it's done it's job of lofting the camera rig, I'll just fly it for a while without the cradle - it's just sheer pleasure.
Thanks again for a great plan, Mike.

Although I used epoxy on my do-hickies, when they get hot in the sun they slide and the sail loses tension. I ordered some extra .1800 Carbon tube and inserted it into the .3150 horizontal spars. My genki has always flown well in low wind so I figured I could compromise a little on weight. The inserted filler pieces were cut just the right length to force the original spars with do-hickies to stay tensioned at the right length. It seems to have worked well. _________________ Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. |

I'd like to build this ... but the cost is getting up there for materials. Can I use wooden dowels instead? Also...would it be okay to use that cheap nylon in the 1 bins and just spray it with tent waterproofing? I read that on a site somewhere.
I originally wanted to build this one & started an order but it quickly got tooooo expensive for my first sewn kite . Now I'm looking at the little Genki online class forum. I think that will be my first one & I'll experiment with my $1 a yard fabric from the discount bin. I also bought some Ripstop at the fabric store at 4.29 a yd(that was before I knew about the seconds options at the kitebuilder store). But I only bought 2 sets of 2yds each because I kept going back to use a 40% off coupon.
I guess you can tell that price is a concern for me. BUT I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to sew a kite. I'm going to try the lil genki online class with wooden dowels and my dollar fabric. I may even splurge & use my expensive Hancock fabric Ripstop. Once I gain some confidence...I'll buy the real stuff from the kitebuilder store. _________________ Having Fun Flying kites....now I want to BUILD! |

Try the cheap stuff on small kites that don't require a lot of work. When I made my Genki, like you, I went with the cheap stuff from the fabric store, thinking "just in case this doesn't work out". It's a great plan, and if you're going big use good fabric. After you've put all of that work into it you won't look back like me and wish you'd used better material. _________________ Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. |

I used this plan as the basis for my 'Vulture' genkis.
It is very easy to follow and the kites fly in a wide wind range from very low to medium strength. I scaled the plan up a touch to fit the spars I had and my 'Vultures' are actually 14.5 ft from wing tip to wing tip (including the 'feathers'). In very light wind they are superb and my 'Vulture' genki is often the only kite in the sky at our club flies (we are plagued by low wind in summer). In fact during the hot summer days it will ride thermals all day long and I have had it 40-60 feet 'upwind' of me many times. I have even flown it indoors when we give school demonstrations during national kite month. Simply walking forward at a 'normal' pace while holding the bridle tow point is enough to get it to leap into the air and follow you down the gym. The look on the faces of a couple of hundred kids as a 14.5 foot wide kite flies over them INSIDE a school gym is something else! _________________ Larry Green
