Crossdeck - Carl Crowell
http://www.kite.com/kite/miscpics/kplans01/cdeck001.gif
Carl originally built this kite as a sculpture. "I was willing to sacrifice wind range and stability to the aesthetic that I was seeking. I retained enough of the flight elements to allow the kite to fly. My main goal was appearance of the kite more than the actual flight. It turned out to fly well anyway." quoted from KiteLines Summer/Fall 1993
The plan/diagram is for a single cell, but many cells can be combined and you can go another step and change the cells' size and shape...
More information about this kite plan can be found in KiteLines Volume10 Number 2 1993.

I looked at these plans quite some time ago, and also found Carl Crosswell's site, but could not figure out how to build the kite. I managed to find an old copy of the magazine Steve references. Great set of instructions were included in that magazine article.
I ended up building a crossdeck from the magazine plans. Kite went together quite easily, biggest problem was sewing the center pocket for the main vertical spar.
Had some problems with bridling. I initially attached a two point bridle along the center line. Kite was stable only in the mildest of winds. Went back and reread the magazine article and rebridled the kite per the instructions. Kite is very stable, but I fly it with about a 20 foot ribbon tail. The magazine article recommends 2 and 4 point bridles attached at the points where the outer triangular sails join with the main sail. I think a two point bridle, attached only to the top intersections, is all that is really needed.
If I were to build one again, I'd probably make the kite longer than wider, to improve stability. If seen double and triple versions of the crossdeck flying at the WSIKF festivals the last couple of years.
An interesting kite, that looks quite nice, and unique in the sky. It's ashame that KiteLines is out of print. Too bad no one ever released a CD of the old articles from KiteLines. Does anyone know if a CD of KiteLines is available anywhere? |

I'll have to look to see if I have any pictures.
Basically, you duplicate the center portion of the kite to get two or three vertical spars. Just scallop the edges down from one spar and up to the next. You only have one set of the outer triangle on each side of the kite. |

Most builders that I know have succesfully used Graphite 2540 for the spine and Graphite 1800 for the spreaders. _________________ Measure once, buy twice!
