Looks like it - have to say that I haven't tested it alot. But during the short flight yesterday it was rock steady. In light wind, yes I think I could leave it for "show off" - sort of "I buildt that thing"
Of course it seems to have a desent pull - so I think the phrase should be "leave it under supervision"
Still have to make another tail - looks alot better with the symmetry
Question - the tail was twisted after about 30 sec. I cut of the "bucket" at the end. It was better but far from perfect. How do people solve that?
Regards

Knowing the Pilot was very forgiving on adjustments, when it was all put together, I clamped the kite on my workbench, and instead of measuring line, just pulled them together in sets of three (TE, middle, and LE) to be sure I had maintained symmetry. Knotted the sets of three, pulled them together into one main tie-on point and the results were very satisfactory. |
That sounds like what I was thinking of doing for my next one (25 square foot). Put it on the floor upside down, lay some boards against the inside of the two outer keels, and two more boards with a small gap between them on the centre line. Add weights if required. Measure the four outer corner bridles and tie them to a carabiner suspended from the ceiling by a thin bungee. The remaining 5 bridles are then tied and cut to meet at the carabiner.
All that assumes that the bottom of the Pilot is indeed supposed to be flat (to start with, before fine-tuning). Is that actually so, or should there be a bit of a flexifoil-like curve to it? _________________ John Rose

I take the cowardly way out. I just don't use flat tails.
Well, maybe narrow ones sometimes, like fluorescent surveyors' flagging tape. It doesn't matter so much if it gets twisted because it's relatively narrow, about 25 mm. _________________ John Rose

Yup, pilot should be bridled flat, not bowed. _________________ Pete

My pilots are not flat. The center is pulled down a tad. It gives a dihedral effect. (That's my story, and I am sticking to it.) _________________

Do any modifications to the profiles need to be made if you wanted to make a nice big one, like 150 ft2 (about 14' x 16') _________________ Simon

I have just been working on a page written by Peter for his website about tuning this Pilot kite. There are some technical drawing I made on there as well. I sent it out as a newsletter last month but for those who are not subscribed to his newsletter, you can see it now at his website.
It is a very interesting article and it has also an update to it coming within a week or so about tuning it and not using the bridle lines to do so.
Take a look:

I am making a composite right now. Rips from lifter with modifications (holes), straight panels (no V), my keels. Practically a new lifter I guess in the end.......I let you know how it goes. I started designing it with the pit bull experience in mind based on the PL plan. I am pretty sure it will fly, otherwise 100 hours will be going in the bin........ _________________ You know me. |
