Kite - Sceptre 1.8m and 2.7m
Author - Dave Holt
Type - 2 Line Soft Airfoil

These plans are to make either a 1.8 m or a 2.7 m version of this fun and fast foil. Best enjoyed in stronger winds the Sceptre is an excellent kite.

Flying the Sceptre in a strong wind certainly calls for some fast responses from the flier, as this kite can move at some speed. Turns are tight (almost on a wing tip), and edge of the window flying is good. This is not a power kite, but a fun kite, and I hope you have fun, both building it and flying it.

I am looking to make this for a friend of mine who has expressed interest in owning an airfoil. He currently has an Invento-HQ LK-88 NPW5 (.68m).

The plans look to be pretty well laid out and easy to follow...
What do you think?

Here is Dave's own web page that has lots more details on building the Sceptre

http://dh.kites.8m.com/index.html

I have one of Dave's airplane kites that he made, ( I traded him for the R/C Ornithopter that is also on his web page,) and the sewing is beautiful. He did a great job. I would imagine that his attention to detail would carry over to his plans and instructions Very Happy .

I think the Sceptre II is a fine design for a first-time foil builder. My 2.7 version even pulls a buggy if the wind is sufficient. Having a one-piece upper and lower skin makes it a breeze to make, and it's a fun foil to fly. Some builders have enlarged it 200% and enjoyed it as a jumping kite.

It may lead to bigger projects, though... Very Happy

Stan, I noticed the winglets on your pictures... how necessary are they? They almost look too small to be of any benefit...

The winglets appear to help in turns. Dave added them to the MkII version.

Nice job on the Sceptre Stan. It would be great to see some pidtures of it flying. The idea behind the design of the Sceptre was to make a kite that was suitable for a first time foil builder. The bridles were a vast improvement on the MK1 version being less complicated and help produce a faster turn without the wing collapsing, the winglets were added to aid stability at speed and help reduce the amount of bridling. I felt that if the winglets were any larger they may have hindered the turning rate.

I can't seem to find these plans on the web anywhere, and it seems that the original site is still down. Does anybody know of an alternate source for the Sceptre II plans?

Thanks,
Mike
