Kites Over The Cape is coming up fast! We'd love to have everyone down here in Cape May to help celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Cape's discovery by Henry Hudson. Here's what you need to know....
Friday night, June 26, will be openhouse at Single Acre Wood (904 Bayview Road, Rio Grande NJ). Lake would like to welcome everyone to his house for some pizza. BYOB. Anyone who's planning on coming, please RSVP to Phil at kitephil@gmail.com.
KOtC kicks off on Saturday morning, June 27. There will be a drop-off zone at the corner of Beach and Decatur Streets in Cape May. All parking is on the street or in pay lots. Bring quarters! Sorry, we tried to work out something for parking, but the city won't budge. They have zero tolerance for parking violations, so park legally and watch your meter carefully.
On the beach between Decatur Street and the convention hall, we'll have marked areas for giant kites, single lines, kids, and sport kites. These will not be fully roped off, just posted with warning signs, so use caution around beachgoers. Andy & Vi are in charge of safety, and will have the last word. If you're flying sport kites, please use short lines (the beach isn't that big). Banners and ground displays are welcome! We'll maintain a lane between the flying areas and the dunes for the beach patrol to drive in.
Name tags! We'll have name tags! They'll serve as your beach tag for the weekend, and also get you 50% off on food and drink at Cabanas Beach Bar & Grill, directly across the street from the flying area. Please, RSVP with the names of everyone coming, and we'll have name tags waiting for you. There will be some generic tags available for stragglers.
Who's coming? Big kites by the Dallmers and Don & Mike. Revs by the Willoughbys and Paul LaMasters and Jeff King. Single lines by Todd Little, and Glen & Tanna Haynes. Kite demos and tester kites by SkyDog Kites and the Cape May Beach & Kite Shop. Kids kitemaking by Cel Dallmer and Barbara Birnman. Ground displays by W.O.W.'s Joyce King and the VanMeers family. Kids activities like bol races, candy drops, and altitude sprints. And with all that, there's still room for more people!
Saturday night... party at Cabanas! Remember, half off food and drink with your name badge. My preference is the Cuban panini, the jerk chicken salad, coconut shrimp, and any of the tasty frozen concoctions mixed by Tommy, NoNo, Eyeball, Franky, and the rest of the Cabanas crew. Plus, live music! And if the wind is blowing, we can walk across the street for some night flying afterwards.
Sunday, June 28, the whole thing repeats.
Don't forget that Saturday traffic into Cape May County is brutal, so either come down on Friday night, or get up really early on Saturday to beat the rush. And all of this is about three blocks away from Cape May's pedestrian mall, so if you're up for some shopping and restaurants, they're close by.
Questions? RSVPs? Contact Phil Broder at 609/465-6575 or kitephil@gmail.com |

Cape May is loaded with hotels and B&Bs, and I'm sure the Chamber of Commerce would be happy to help you find one. As for "reasonable", I won't even go there. Let's see, there's Congress Hall, where Oprah likes to stay....
You might look north to Wildwood Crest and Wildwood (both one island to the north, just a short bridge away) for cheaper rates. |

Coming up this weekend! Looks like the rain is past and the sand should be toasty. Looking forward to sharing some beach with Glen and Tanna Haynes (my mentors!). Hope to see some more of you there. |

Slight change of plans in that I'll be there Sunday now instead of Saturday, but I'm looking forward to it! We should have a special fly in honor of Jeff King.
Ps. Check out the Cape May Times calendar!

The Cape May County Herald had a nice article as well recently. _________________ Better Living Through Kite Flying...

Hmmm, a special Jeff King fly.... we could all stand on one leg? Or take lots of pain meds?
(FYI, Jeff King of Wings Over Washington broke his leg in four places a few days ago. But in true kiter spirit, he and Joyce are packing up the WOW banner display and sending it up here with someone else. The show must go on!!!!)
And I may have forgot to mention, but for all those kiters who RSVP'd that they'd be coming, you'll be getting 50% off of food and drink at Cabanas Beach Bar & Grill. That's right, half price beer!!!!! And margaritas!!!!!! And shrimp, and nachos, and jerk chicken, and clams, and everything else on the menu. We take care of kiters down here at Exit Zero. |

Just wanted to say Thanks Phil for organizing this event! I know it had it's challenges logistically speaking, but it was still a fun and lovely day! I know that everyone in our group also appreciated the beach tag waiver and especially the discount at Cabanas. Please thank them for taking care of us. It was a nice break when the sun had gotten too hot!
Many people approached us and talked about kiting. We directed several folks to their particular kiting interests. I'm happy to report it was a mixed bag of traditional and sport kiting questions. _________________ Better Living Through Kite Flying...
